Honduran Marriage in the U.S.: How to Register It

If you are Honduran and you got married in the United States, you will likely need to register your marriage in Honduras so it has legal effect back home: change of marital status, inheritance, pensions, procedures before the National Registry of Persons (RNP) or future passport matters. In this guide we explain how a marriage performed in the U.S. is registered, why it is worth doing, what role the apostille of the certificate plays and which documents the consulate usually asks for.

ℹ️ Important: requirements, fees and timeframes vary by consulate and can change over time. Always confirm the current procedure with your consulate or at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn before starting. Be wary of agents who promise to "speed up" a registration that is personal and official.

Why register the marriage in Honduras?

Your marriage performed before a U.S. authority is fully valid there, but Honduras does not recognize it automatically. For the Honduran State to acknowledge your new marital status, the certificate must be registered with the National Registry of Persons (RNP), a process many consulates help to handle or channel.

  • Proves your married status before the Honduran authorities.
  • Helps with inheritance, pensions and rights of the spouses and children.
  • Useful for future procedures: name change, passport, notarial or RNP matters.
  • Makes it easier to later register children born in the U.S. as Hondurans.

If you also plan to register your children, see our guide on registering a U.S.-born child as Honduran.

Where and with whom it is registered

It helps to separate two things that are sometimes confused:

💍 The ceremony

The marriage is performed before the authorities of the U.S. state where you live (county clerk, judge, officiant). That is where your U.S. marriage certificate comes from.

🏛️ The registration

For it to have effect in Honduras, that certificate is registered with the RNP. The consulate usually guides you and receives the apostilled documents to channel the registration.

Each consulate organizes this service a little differently. Before going, confirm whether your office registers directly, only legalizes documents, or guides you for the RNP procedure in Honduras.

The apostille of the marriage certificate

The key step is the apostille. The United States and Honduras are both parties to the Hague Convention, so a U.S. public document —such as your marriage certificate— is validated internationally through the apostille issued by the competent authority of the state where it was issued (usually the Secretary of State of that state).

  • Request a certified copy of the marriage certificate from the county or state registry.
  • Obtain the apostille of that copy from the relevant state authority.
  • If the consulate requires it, you may also need a Spanish translation of the document.

We explain this process in more detail in our guide on apostille and legalization of documents.

Documents usually required

The exact list varies by office, but in general you will need:

  • Marriage certificate issued in the U.S., with its apostille.
  • Honduran identity documents of the spouses: DNI/identity card and/or Honduran passport.
  • Appointment confirmation obtained through the CitaConsular system.
  • Where applicable, a Spanish translation of the certificate.
  • Payment of the consular fee.

Note: some consulates request their own forms or additional data (place of residence, parents' details, etc.). Verify the official checklist before the appointment.

Step by step

  1. Get the marriage certificate certified in the U.S. state where you married.
  2. Apostille the certificate with the competent state authority.
  3. Book your appointment at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn, choosing the U.S. and your consulate.
  4. Attend with your Honduran ID documents and the apostilled certificate.
  5. Pay the fee and submit the documents so the RNP registration can be channeled.

Frequently asked questions about Honduran marriage

Is it mandatory to register my U.S. marriage in Honduras?

A marriage performed in the U.S. is valid there, but for it to have legal effect in Honduras (marital status, inheritance, pensions, RNP procedures) it is advisable to register it. Without registration, you may still appear as single in the Honduran registry.

Does the consulate perform the marriage or only register it?

Generally the marriage is performed before the authorities of the U.S. state where you live. The consulate's usual role is to help you register or record it in Honduras once it has taken place. Confirm with your consulate which specific services it offers.

Why do I need to apostille the marriage certificate?

The apostille is the seal that internationally validates a U.S. public document so it is recognized in Honduras, since both countries are parties to the Hague Convention. It is issued by the state authority (Secretary of State) of the state that issued the certificate.

Do I need to translate the certificate into Spanish?

It depends on the consulate and the registry. Many offices ask for a Spanish translation of the apostilled certificate. Ask your consulate whether a translation is required and whether it must be an official translation.

How much does registering the marriage cost and how long does it take?

The fee and timeframes vary by consulate and year, and are paid on the day of the appointment. Since the final registration is performed by the RNP in Honduras, the total time may also depend on that procedure. Confirm costs and timeframes with your consulate before starting.
