Honduras–U.S. Dual Citizenship: A Practical Guide

Many Hondurans in the United States wonder whether they can be citizens of both countries at once: keeping their Honduran nationality while also naturalizing as U.S. citizens. The good news is that Honduras recognizes dual nationality. In this guide we explain, in plain language, how it works, what happens when a Honduran becomes a U.S. citizen, how to register children born on U.S. soil, the benefits of keeping both nationalities and which documents to keep. This is not legal advice: it is guidance so you know where to confirm your situation.

ℹ️ Notice: this page is informational and does not replace the advice of an attorney or official information. Nationality rules may have nuances depending on your case. Always confirm your specific situation with your Honduran consulate or at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn before making decisions.

Does Honduras allow dual nationality?

Yes. Honduran law recognizes dual (or multiple) nationality, which means a Honduran can acquire another citizenship - such as U.S. citizenship - without that, in itself, causing the loss of their Honduran status. For the State of Honduras, you remain a national and keep your rights as such.

This is especially relevant for the large Honduran community in the U.S., because it lets you put down roots in your host country without giving up your bond with Honduras: its passport, its identity and the ability to pass nationality on to your children.

If you become a U.S. citizen

When a Honduran naturalizes as a U.S. citizen, they generally keep their Honduran nationality. You usually do not have to formally renounce Honduras to obtain U.S. citizenship, and Honduras still considers you a national.

  • Keep your Honduran passport current; it remains your identity and travel document as a Honduran.
  • Keep your Honduran DNI or identity document up to date.
  • Store your U.S. naturalization certificate together with your Honduran documents.

Each situation may have particularities. If you have doubts about how naturalization affects you, consult your consulate and, for the U.S. side, an accredited immigration attorney.

Children born in the United States

A child born in the U.S. to a Honduran parent usually has two nationalities: U.S. by being born in the country and Honduran, if their birth is registered at the consulate. Registering them as Honduran opens the door to Honduran documents and rights:

📝 Register the birth

Register your child's birth at the consulate by presenting the U.S. certificate (often apostilled) and your Honduran documents.

Benefits of keeping both nationalities

Keeping dual citizenship is not only symbolic; it has concrete advantages for you and your family:

  • Freedom of movement: you can enter and leave Honduras as a national, with your Honduran passport.
  • Rights in both countries: you keep civil rights and the ability to inherit, own property or carry out procedures in Honduras.
  • Passing it to your children: you can register your children as Honduran and give them a dual identity.
  • Family and cultural bond: you keep your Honduran identity without giving up your life in the U.S.

Documents to keep

So your dual citizenship is easy to prove at any time, keep your Honduran documentation current:

  • Valid Honduran passport: your main travel and identity document as a Honduran.
  • Honduran DNI or identity document: proves your identity and nationality inside and outside Honduras.
  • Birth certificate: the basis of any identity procedure; get a recent copy when you need it.
  • U.S. documents: your naturalization certificate or U.S. passport, kept together with the rest.

How to protect your Honduran nationality

Keeping your nationality alive is simple if your papers are in order:

  1. Renew your passport before it expires; you can do so even if you already have U.S. citizenship.
  2. Keep your DNI and your registration at the RNP up to date.
  3. Register your U.S.-born children as soon as possible, while gathering the documentation is easier.
  4. Book an appointment at your consulate at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn for any identity or registration procedure.

Frequently asked questions about dual citizenship

Do I lose my Honduran nationality when I naturalize in the U.S.?

Generally, no. Honduras recognizes dual nationality, so a Honduran who becomes a U.S. citizen usually keeps their Honduran nationality. This page is informational; confirm your specific case with your consulate.

Can I hold a Honduran passport and a U.S. passport at the same time?

Yes. By keeping both nationalities you can keep both passports valid. Many Hondurans with dual citizenship use the U.S. passport for some trips and the Honduran one to enter and leave Honduras as nationals.

My child was born in the U.S. - how do I give them Honduran nationality?

You must register their birth at the consulate by presenting the U.S. birth certificate (often apostilled) and your Honduran documents. Once registered as Honduran, they can obtain their birth certificate, passport and, later, their DNI.

Does dual citizenship affect my immigration status or TPS?

Honduran nationality and your U.S. immigration status are separate matters. Keeping your Honduran nationality and documents current is always advisable. For immigration questions (residency, citizenship, TPS), consult an accredited attorney and verify with USCIS.

What documents do I need to prove my Honduran nationality?

Ideally, keep your Honduran passport, your DNI or identity document and your birth registration at the RNP current. With these documents up to date you can prove your nationality and carry out procedures at the consulate at any time.
